In August 2016, the Ford Genk Masterplan was launched – a plan formulated by Flanders to transform the former Ford site into a new business zone, with the ambition to create a total of 2,500 jobs on the site. A year later, in collaboration with the firm Aertssen, we joined forces for the challenging demolition of the former Ford factory.

The Major Challenge of the Ford Genk Project

  1. Finding the most economical and efficient method of evacuating various waste streams.
  2. Deploying the appropriate demolition equipment and personnel in the right positions. Given the 50-heCTAre size of the site, this organization is crucial.
  3. Asbestos removal is largely carried out simultaneously with the demolition works.
  4. Required machinery: an average of 30 crawler excavators in operation.

Estimated Waste Streams

  • 50,000 tons of metals
  • 170,000 tons (80,000 m³) of concrete
  • 115,000 tons (70,000 m³) of soil
  • 8,000 tons of insulation materials
  • 8,000 m² of asbestos material
  • 150 transformers

Works

The current project involves the demolition of the C-Hall, including all ancillary buildings (power station, water treatment plant, various other sheds, …).

This is currently the largest demolition site in Flanders!

The ongoing project lasts about a year, with possible extensions. The current assignment only covers half of the entire Ford site. The other half of the site also needs to be demolished in the near future, but that part is yet to be tendered, as well as the soil reMediation project. Naturally, Aclagro is highly interested in securing these future works as well.
